Vetting a Vitter

A few weeks ago, the Louisiana Democratic Party filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission over an illegal contribution to David Vitter’s campaign from disgraced former Mississippi Representative Chip Pickering.

The FEC is investigating but it’s up to the people of Louisiana to keep David Vitter honest.

Since David Vitter is no stranger to breaking the law, we’re asking for a little grassroots help to comb through the mountain of data in Vitter’s most recent FEC report.

Please look through this FEC report to help us investigate two big questions:

#1 Who is giving money to David Vitter?

Starting on page 5, this FEC report lists all individuals and PAC’s who have contributed to Vitter’s campaign fund. Throw some names in google and see what you find. Are there any family values crusaders on the list? Have other elected officials helped fill Vitter’s campaign coffers? Is there any connection between Vitter’s campaign contributors and legislation he supports or opposes?

#2 How is David Vitter spending his campaign money?

Does he pay campaign staff, or does he rely on his taxpayer-funded official staff to carry out campaign duties? How much does he pay consultants and what do they do for the campaign? Who has received the most money from Vitter in the third quarter of 2009?

Post your findings in the comments section.
